Letter from Mr. Burnside
Dear Lakota East Students and Families,
On Thursday, October 17th, 2024, the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) will be offered at Lakota East High School. The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a vital step toward reaching college goals geared towards sophomores and juniors. The test measures the reading, writing/language and math skills students need for college and a career. After the test, students receive feedback on how ready they are for college along with tools to help them improve.
The PSAT assessment serves as a practice SAT, one of the two major college readiness tests used in our country. Juniors taking the assessment will automatically be entered into the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test – a program that can result in scholarship awards for those who perform at very high levels. While 10th grade students are not eligible for the National Merit competition, taking the PSAT as a sophomore will help them to be better prepared for the assessment as a junior. It will also give you, your student, and the school important information about academic areas of strength and weakness.
This year the PSAT/NMSQT will be given in a digital format. The College Board has communicated that the test will be easier to take, shorter, have more time per question, and comes with a built-in calculator. Students who register for the test, will take it with their district issued chromebooks on the Lakota East Main Campus. This year, Lakota Local Schools is excited to present this opportunity free of charge to all of our families.
October 17th will be the only test session available for students to participate in the PSAT/NMSQT this academic year. Please be aware that October 17th, 2024 is a Professional Development Day for our staff and students are not required to attend school unless they register for this test session. The deadline to register is September 8th, 2024.
